Dr. Valeria Torres has had a lifelong passion for animals and knew from an early age that she wanted to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.
Growing up, she spent a lot of her time playing volleyball throughout high school and college while balancing her academics. She volunteered with her local veterinarian whenever her schedule allowed and later gained additional experience volunteering with the Humane Society of Puerto Rico, where she developed an appreciation for shelter medicine and caring for animals in need.
Dr. Torres earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Gannon University before earning her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. During veterinary school, she developed interests in surgery, anesthesia, oncology, and preventive medicine. She also had the opportunity to continue exploring her interest in shelter medicine and hopes to find ways to support the stray animal community, particularly in Puerto Rico.
As a veterinarian, Dr. Torres strives to create an environment where both pets and their families feel comfortable, heard, and never judged. She values empathy, clear communication, and working together with each family to make informed decisions that are best for their pet. Fluent in both English and Spanish, she enjoys connecting with and caring for families from diverse backgrounds.
Outside of the clinic, Dr. Torres enjoys working out, traveling, and spending time outdoors; whether it’s relaxing at the beach, exploring new places, or staying active. She especially enjoys spending time with her fiancé, family, and friends, and loves returning to Puerto Rico whenever she can to reconnect with home and her loved ones.
She is also a proud cat mom to Nacho and Junior, two rescued cats who hold a special place in her heart. As kittens, they were part of a stray colony that Dr. Torres cared for while attending a veterinary school in Illinois. What began as feeding and looking after them outdoors eventually led to bringing them home, and they have been part of her family ever since.
